teenagers of somerset - the curse of small town life
teens in color...
- What does your photo essay convey about the history or present day culture of Somerset or Berkley?
- My photo essay conveys the emotions and lives of the teenage population in Somerset. It captures the present day beauty and struggle of growing up in a small town.
- What subjects or subject matter (or places or people) illustrate(s) your idea?
- The subjects I chose were my friends and classmates. Those who had many photos taken and posted of them best embodied the feelings I have at the concept of small town life. I chose to do portraits because I feel that nothing tells a story better than someone's facial expression.
- How did you edit, manipulate or sequence your photos to convey your idea for this final photo series?
- I chose to do most of my images in black and white. I felt that these two colors were perfect for embodying the blandness of present day high school life.
- Select one of the photos in your series and tell how you composed and edited the photograph.
- I will talk about my photograph of Phil standing by the water. This image was taken on a cloudy day and when brought into Photoshop was extremely dark. After turning it to grayscale, I adjusted the levels so the image was visible and no longer filled with shadow. When taking the image I positioned the camera so Phil was standing at one end of the frame. This way there was a good balance of space.
- Thinking of Somerset and/or Berkley's rich historical past, what do you envision for the town's futures? What is next?
- I envision that the town will pretty much remain the same for the next decade or so. I feel that Somerset is rooted in tradition and is afraid of change. I hope that in the future the town will be open to pushing the boundaries.
